History
It all started with a simple PHP script and a weird domain name. During his spare time, the creator of WordPlop used to mess with PHP scripting and do web design for fun. A script to let people upload text and have it saved as a TXT file was born. With that came a simple, colorful site template, and the search for a domain name began. Most .com domains being taken, WordPlop seemed like a great find – words would be plopped, or dropped, into the site and archived. Like a photo hosting service, but for text. It was meant to be a useful tool for programmers to share code. It never took off.
After about half a year of just sitting there, the idea was plopped itself, and the website became a technology blog just for fun, since the domain was already paid for. Browsing website and blogging related forums when bored, the founder of WordPlop knew some aspects of starting a website, so social media was used to try to jump-start the site. This brought in about 20 people daily, which was more than any of the previous websites made for fun by WordPlop’s founder.
Then, just a few days after the blog was started, something wonderful happened. An article on WordPlop was featured on an 8000+ unique visitors a day website. This boosted WordPlop’s traffic to 300+ unique visitors daily, but more importantly, it got Google to pick up the site. More great articles were posted, spread on social media sites, and the traffic continues to grow. The site will keep growing based on content, not advertising budget.
A goal of ours here at WordPlop is to one day require a dedicated server to run the site.
