Causes of pain in the neck

The right side of the neck is normal for people to feel pain. The pain arises in most cases because of a muscle strain or another benign cause. Using home remedies and drugs, people will also relieve their pain. It is best to see a doctor, however, for severe or chronic neck pain.

The neck, containing spinal bones, muscles, and other tissue, is a crucial part of the human body. The neck is exposed and at risk of injury, unlike certain other vital parts of the body. The neck is often vulnerable to pressure since individuals continuously push it during the day.

In linked areas, such as the shoulders, back, jaw, and head, it is often normal for a person to feel pain.

This article discusses four common causes of pain in the neck:

Degeneration or wear and tear

Pressure on the right side of the neck can be caused by incremental wear and tear.

With age, the vertebrae and discs in the neck will wear down. An individual may experience chronic, or constant, pain in the neck as they degenerate.

The vertebrae, disks, and other parts of the neck may also break down due to certain medical conditions.

Bad sleeping position

In the shoulders, back, or neck, it is normal to wake up feeling stiffness or discomfort.

The sleeping position people take, the number of pillows they use, and the mattress’s firmness can impact how they feel waking up in the morning.

Falling asleep with either a lack of head support or out of sync with the neck raises the risk of waking up with a sore neck.

Non-specific neck pain

In certain circumstances, the precise source of neck pain is difficult to determine.

A mild sprain or tear in the muscle tissue frequently results in neck pain without an obvious cause. The most common neck pain is this form of pain. Often the discomfort may be attributed to poor posture. For extended periods, keeping the neck out of alignment will strain the muscles. This is especially true when a person is bent forward over their work for several hours during the day.

Sudden-onset or acute torticollis

Torticollis is a medical disorder in which one side of the head becomes bent. Trying to straighten your head can be very painful. The cause is not always considered to be torticollis.

Doctors assume that most cases are due to mild neck ligaments or muscle sprains, but it may also be a reason to expose the neck to cold temperatures for a prolonged period.

Torticollis sometimes happens overnight, meaning that a person may have no symptoms when they go to bed but will wake up unable to move their neck. In most cases, after a couple of days, the pain will subside, and movement will return to normal.

Torticollis can sometimes be a sign of a more serious health condition. Tumors, diseases, and side effects of taking medicine are some possible root causes of torticollis.

Neck pain is a primary symptom of rheumatoid arthritis in the neck. The severity of neck pain varies from person-to-person. You may feel a dull or throbbing ache in the back of your neck around the base of the skull. Joint swelling and stiffness can also make it difficult to move your head from side to side.
