3 Steps to Healthy, Happy Aging

Health starts declining as we age and that’s something no one can avoid. There are some things you can do to slow that decline, however. If you lived recklessly until now and you’re feeling like time is finally catching up on you, know that it’s not too late. The first thing you have to do is take a long hard look at your habits. You then need to look at areas where you could improve and fix them immediately. Here are a few tips for healthy, happy aging.

Stay Active

One of the most important things if you want to stay happy and age gracefully is staying active. Both strength and cardio exercise should be part of your routine, but you shouldn’t overdo it. Especially when it comes to cardio.

It has been shown that elderly people could benefit from having an extra layer of fat, so don’t aim for the lowest BMI possible. Getting at least an hour of moderate exercise every week should be enough. Strength training is especially important for aging men as it can allow them to maintain their testosterone levels.

Look at Assisted Living

If you want to make staying active easier, then you should consider looking at assisted living facilities. Good ones have physical therapists and gym facilities and tons of activities for people of all ages and fitness levels.

Living in an assisted living facility is also great if you’re starting to develop a chronic condition. You’ll have people looking over you and they can help you make decisions that will prevent your condition from deteriorating.

If you’re looking for a great Brentwood assisted living facility, McKnight Place could be a good option. Facilities like this offer access to all the resources you need to live a healthier life.

Eat Better

Most people in this country don’t eat as healthily as they should. You might’ve been able to get away with eating poorly when you were younger, but the effects of poor eating habits are much more pronounced once you get older.

You will need to do everything you can to correct your diet and start cleaning up your pantry. Saturated fats should be the first ones to go followed by refined foods and simple sugar.

Move to healthy fats like avocado oil or coconut oil and keep the frying to a minimum. Deep-fried foods should be completely off-limits but having a piece of fried chicken in good cooking oil once in a blue won’t hurt you.

Pack your diet full of healthy complex carbs to keep that blood sugar in check. And switch to lean meats to reduce your overall saturated fat intake. You also need to pay very special attention to the amount of salt you consume and the sodium in the everyday foods you eat.

These are all things that you could do immediately if you want to age as well as possible. Take action immediately and you could stop or even reverse some of the damage you’ve already suffered.
