Returning to Work After Having a Child – Top Tips

If you are a career woman and you’re planning a return to the business arena now that Junior has reached the toddler stage, you’ve come to the right place, as we offer a few tips to help you make the transition and hit the ground running.

  • Sourcing the right childcare facility – Finding the best childcare in Penrith is not difficult using online reviews; equally, if you have a friend who is further down the career road and she’s happy with her childcare arrangement, even better! Narrow it down to several and take a tour of each; this should tell you what you need to know, look for a secure, caring environment.
  • Prepare your digital devices – Your smartphone, tablet and laptop should be prepared before you head off to the office. Remove all junk and scan all devices for malware; your boss wouldn’t be impressed if you infected the company network! Some companies forbid employees to use personal devices and check with the office. Wipe old data so your drives are ready for the many transfers when you connect to the company’s network.
  • Change your sleeping routine a month in advance – If you have been at the mercy of Junior and have slipped out of a regular sleep routine, switch a few weeks before you return, otherwise you will always be fatigued and that won’t do!
  • Look for partner support – If you’re going back to work on a full-time basis, this will require the full support of your partner; many Australian families have roles reversed, with the woman working full time and the man takes care of the kids and the home. If it works, why not? Some women make higher salaries than their partners, after all, we are living in a time of equal rights.
  • Daily workout – While being a supermum is a workout in itself, hitting the work road running is going to be tough physically; get into yoga now and do 15 minutes of stretching before working out. You probably had a plan to get your figure back; take an A-Z supplement every morning and include fresh fruit and veg in your diet. Here is a great article about team-building skills in management.
  • Stay positive – It can be tough to get back to a heavy work routine after a year of taking it easy and one thing to watch for is negativity. It’s easy to start feeling sorry for yourself sometimes, but by focusing on the pluses, the minuses seem to disappear. Meditation is a great stress reliever and if your business is high-pressure, you will benefit greatly by exploring inner peace.

The first month will be the hardest, after that, you start to get back into the pace of the business arena; once you find a good childcare facility, Junior is taken care of and you won’t have to worry about your offspring. Click here for post-natal information from the Australian government.
