Employee Training Videos : How to Create Engaging Educational Videos

Did you know that businesses spend over $1,000 on training per employee? This might seem like a lot, but there’s nothing more important than having a well-trained team.

You may be able to cut some of your training costs if you make great employee training videos. As long as the job doesn’t change too often, you’ll be able to re-use those videos for all of your new hires.

We’re here to talk about how you can go about creating the perfect corporate training videos. Read on to learn more.

Spend Plenty of Time Planning

Too many business owners don’t think that training videos should be prioritized. Yes, the video might not be the most important thing on your to-do list, but you’re ideally going to be using this video for years to come. If you want to get the most out of it, you need to make it perfect!

Resist the urge to film something on your phone during off-hours. Instead, take a lot of time to plan ahead so you can gather all of your materials, do some writing, and assess your goals.

Speaking of goals, what are you trying to accomplish with your training video? All corporate training videos are different, and you have plenty of options. Don’t feel beholden to a “standard” boring video.

Do you want your video to be amusing, or do you want to keep it serious? How much are you trying to teach your employees with this video?

This is also when you need to consider your budget. You can make a low-budget video, but if you don’t plan around it, you won’t get the results that you want.

Don’t Forget Scripts and Storyboards

Any good video has a script and a storyboard behind it, even if it looks simple on the surface. While there might be some ad-libbing going on, the majority of the video is going to be pre-planned.

Approach this as you would any other important piece of written marketing material. Consider hiring a professional scriptwriter if you’re not sure what to say.

If you don’t start with a script, it’s likely that your video is going to be all over the place.

Keep a Short and Simple Video Format

Short, sweet, and to the point. That’s what your corporate training videos should be. Remember that you have to hold your employees’ attention for the entire duration, and you won’t be able to do that if the video goes on for too long.

Even the most entertaining training video can’t stay engaging.

While you should have entertaining elements to your video, you need to hone in on what you’re trying to have your employees take away from it. It’s helpful to incorporate text for main points and have a brief summary at the end.

We recommend keeping a single training video to ten minutes or less, but five is often better. You can always make multiple videos that you can spread out over several training periods.

Pick a Single Topic

Speaking of making multiple videos, it’s a good idea to pick a single training topic per video. You can think of your videos as “chapters” of your entire training manual.

This might seem like it would be more work on the surface, but that isn’t necessarily true. Think about how difficult it would be to fit all of your training resources into a five to ten-minute video. You won’t have enough time to adequately cover everything unless the job is simple.

By splitting your videos up into separate topics, not only are you making them more engaging for your employees, but you’re also making video creation easier for yourself.

Employees will also have an easier time retaining information if you split the videos up. You can use the time between videos to answer questions or do activities to make sure that everyone is on the same page.

Use High-Quality Tools

Again, you can get away with using your cellphone camera and editing your corporate training video in iMovie, but most people don’t have the skills or expertise to make that look professional. It’s in your best interest to think of your training video as an investment.

You can often rent camera equipment from libraries, but if this isn’t an option, you may want to consider buying a new or used camera. Even cameras from a few years ago will be more than good enough for the majority of video projects and you may be able to get one at an affordable price if you buy it refurbished.

It’s also a good idea to invest in a professional editing program. The Adobe suite is decent for beginners and you can get it with a monthly subscription.

Consider Hiring Professionals

Making a high-quality training video is a lot of work. You already have so many other things to do as a business owner, so why not hire professionals to help you out?

A professional team will have all of the filming and editing tools that you need to make a great training video. They can take care of the hard work for you so you and your team can continue working on the things that make the business run smoothly.

Use Other Resources Alongside Your Video

Why stop with a training video? It’s always a good idea to incorporate other resources so help your employee understand and retain information about the video.

Consider including fun games or quizzes. Give them a typed version of the main points of the video that they can take with them. This way, your employees don’t have to continue re-watching the video if they forget something and they can read along if they struggle to pay attention to video content.

Employee Training Videos: Make Yours Pop!

Making great employee training videos doesn’t have to be hard. Effective training videos should be brief, at least somewhat entertaining, and as high-quality as possible if you want your employees to get the most out of them. It’s time to start writing your script!
